What Those Google Search Console Emails Really Mean (and Why You Don’t Need to Panic)

If you’ve received an email from Google Search Console and found yourself confused or concerned by what it says, you’re not alone. These notifications often sound more urgent (or more technical) than they really are — and understanding what they mean can help you avoid unnecessary stress.

This post will walk you through what those alerts actually mean, what to ignore, and what might require action — whether you’re managing your website on your own or working with a professional.

And if you’re one of my website maintenance clients:
Great news — this is something I take care of for you behind the scenes. You still get full access to your Google Search Console account (because you should always own your data), but you don’t have to stress over what any of it means. I see every alert you see — and I handle it.

So if you’ve ever thought, “Should I forward this to Stefani?” — don’t worry. I’ve already seen it and taken action.

Now, let’s talk about what these messages actually mean.

First, What Is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool from Google that helps website owners monitor how their site is performing in search results. It alerts you (and me if I’m managing your site) to potential issues like:

  • Pages that can’t be indexed
  • Broken links (404 errors)
  • Duplicate content
  • Redirects
  • And more

It’s an incredibly valuable tool, but it can also be confusing if you’re not used to reading technical alerts and error messages.

The Bigger the Site, the More You’ll See

It’s also worth noting: the more pages your website has, the more likely Google is to flag little issues. That’s especially true if we’ve just gone through a site rebuild and changed or redirected a lot of URLs.

These alerts don’t necessarily mean something is wrong — they’re just part of the normal process of helping Google crawl, understand, and index your site properly.

What Do These Messages Actually Mean?

Here are a few of the most common alerts you might see in Google Search Console — and what they really mean (in plain English):

“Page with redirect” not indexed

This is a good thing. It means an old URL has been redirected to a new one, and Google is skipping the old version (as it should).  You can learn more about redirects in this blog post.

404 or soft 404 errors

  • A 404 error means a page is missing — maybe it was deleted on purpose or the URL was mistyped.
  • A soft 404 means the page technically loads, but Google doesn’t think it has useful content (like a blank page or one that says “no results”).

When you’re on my maintenance plan, I review these and either redirect, restore, or ignore them depending on the situation. If you’re managing your own website, be sure to investigate these errors or reach out if you’d like to remove this task from your to-do list.

Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user

This means there are two very similar pages on your site, and Google chose to index the one it thinks is best — which may or may not match what we told it to do. This isn’t usually a problem, but it’s good to check to make sure Google made a smart choice.

Blocked by robots.txt

This simply means a page has been marked “off limits” to Google. It’s usually intentional (like thank-you pages or admin URLs), but I always double-check to make sure nothing important is being hidden by mistake.

Crawled – currently not indexed

Google has looked at the page, but hasn’t added it to search results. This could be due to thin content, duplication, or simply because the page isn’t important enough. I monitor these and make adjustments if needed.

You’re Covered (That’s the Point of Maintenance!)

One of the biggest benefits of my website maintenance plan is that I handle all of this behind the scenes so you don’t have to.

You don’t need to worry about technical jargon, scary-sounding alerts, or wondering whether your site is running smoothly. That’s my job!

If there’s ever an issue that needs your input (or that falls outside the scope of your regular plan), I’ll always reach out directly.

In Summary: If You Got the Email, You’re Not Alone

Google Search Console emails can be confusing, but now you know what they mean and why they show up. Most of the time, they’re just routine updates or alerts that don’t require urgent action — especially if you’re already working with someone who monitors and manages your site.

If you are one of my maintenance clients, rest easy knowing I receive the same alerts and take care of them for you behind the scenes.

And if you’re not on a maintenance plan but want this kind of proactive support for your website, I’d love to hear from you. Whether you need ongoing help or a one-time review, I’m here to make the technical side of your website feel a whole lot less stressful.
