How to Set Up a Facebook Business Page for TOTAL Beginners
I’ve helped so many clients with their websites and social presence, and one of the biggest “Wait…how do I do this?” questions I get is about setting up a Business Page on Facebook.
Traveling through the Meta universe can lead you in all kinds of wrong directions sometimes. I’m here to keep you on the right track.
This step-by-step guide will walk you through exactly how to set up a Facebook Business Page (even if you’ve never touched this stuff before).
Whether you’re a total beginner, small business owner, freelancer, side hustler, or someone who just wants their digital ducks in a row, this guide is for you.
What Is a Facebook Business Page, Anyway?
A Facebook Business Page is your business’s official spot on Facebook – it’s where potential customers can find your info, read updates, send you messages, leave reviews, and more.
Why do you even need one? Well, for one, Facebook’s got the most active monthly users of any social platform, as of February 2025.
Another cool thing? Setting up a Business Page on Facebook opens you up to all kinds of Meta tools like analytics, messaging, and even paid advertisements (if you ever go down that road!).
And no – you don’t need to post every day or “go viral” to make it worth it. It’s just a great way of showing up, being findable, and giving people an easy way to connect with you.
So let’s do it! Together. With snacks. Always with snacks!
Before You Even Click “Create”
I know you’re eager to get started, but before you get moving, there are a few items you’ll need in order to breeze through the setup without hitting a bunch of annoying roadblocks. Think of this as your little pre-checklist to make the whole process easier.
A Personal Facebook Account
Don’t panic! A personal Facebook profile is required to create and manage your Page, but your personal account doesn’t need to be visible to the public. No one can see your beach selfies or your Aunt Linda’s casserole recipe unless you want them to.
A Few Business Details
- Your business name (exactly how you want it to appear)
- A short description (255 characters or less)
- Your website URL (if you have one)
- Business contact details (email, phone, or both)
- Address (if you’re a brick-and-mortar or local biz)
- Operating hours
- Business category (e.g., bakery, yoga studio, web designer)
- A profile picture (your logo is perfect – 170×170 pixels minimum)
- A cover photo (branded graphic, product pic, or something visual – 1640×856 pixels works great)
Pop all this in a Google Doc or notes app so it’s ready to copy and paste. You’ll thank yourself later!
Now, Let’s Build Your New Business Page!
Step 1: Go to The Right Place
Head to facebook.com/pages/create. You can also click “Pages” in the left-hand menu of your Facebook homepage and then “Create New Page”.
Step 2: Name + Category + Description
Enter your Page name (use your actual business name), choose a category (type a few keywords and pick what matches best), and write your description (short, sweet, and helpful is the name of the game).
Heads up: You can’t make up your own category. Facebook lets you pick up to three categories – but you’ve gotta choose from their list. So stick with the most specific option that fits your business (like ‘dessert shop’ instead of ‘local business’) to help people find you.
Step 3: Add Your Branding
This is where first impressions are made! Upload your profile picture and your cover photo. For your profile photo, it’s best to use your logo…unless you are a solopreneur. In that case, a great headshot can help your audience feel more connected to you.
These images are super visible, so make sure they’re high-quality and on-brand, and avoid blurry screenshots or random stock images if possible.
Need cover photo ideas? You could use:
- A seasonal promotion
- A featured product
- A lifestyle photo that shows what your brand is all about
- A nice pic of your team
Step 4: Fill Out All the Good Stuff
Go to “Edit Page Info” and add:
- Your website
- Contact info
- Business info (overview, mission, etc.)
- Start date (optional, but nice to have!)
- Products/services
- Hours of operation
- Address (if you want to be publicly visible for local searches)
Next, claim your @username (like facebook.com/YourBusinessName). Keep it clean, on-brand, and avoid funky symbols. Once you claim it, don’t change it later – you could break links to your Page (eek!).
Step 5: Add a Call-to-Action Button
Click the “+ Add Button” under your cover photo and choose something that fits your goal, like “Book Now”, “Shop Now”, “Send Message”, or “Learn More”. Make sure it leads to the right place – like your booking software, product listings, contact page, or Messenger.
Step 6: Adjust Settings to Your Liking
Under “Settings” (in the left-hand menu), check these:
- Who can post on your Page (I usually recommend turning off random visitor posts)
- Country/age restrictions (only if needed)
- Turn on instant replies and/or auto-responses in the Inbox → Automated Responses section
- Adjust your notification settings so your phone isn’t blowing up 24/7. We love boundaries.
Step 7: Add People (But Be Smart About It)
Go to Settings → Page Roles and assign people you trust.
- Admin = full control
- Editor = can do almost everything
- Moderator = can manage messages and comments
- Advertiser = can run ads
- Analyst = can only view insights
My advice? Only give Admin access to people who genuinely need it. And if you’re working with a team, use Meta Business Manager – it’s made for that!
Step 8: Get Things Going with Some Posts
Before you invite a single soul to like or follow your Page, make sure you’ve got at least 3–5 posts on it.
Ideas:
- A welcome post
- A behind-the-scenes photo
- A meet the team pic
- A testimonial or client win
- A feature on your product or service
- An FAQ-style post
Then pin your fave post to the top by clicking the three dots → “Pin post”.

Step 9: Now You Can Invite People!
Click “Invite Friends”, but only invite folks who will actually care about your business. No random high school classmates who haven’t talked to you in a decade.
Then, share your new Page on Instagram, in your email newsletter, on your website, and with any team members helping run the show. Don’t forget to add your Page link to your business cards and email signature, too!
Step 10: Engage with Those People (The Right Way)
Got some likes, comments, or DMs? Don’t ghost ’em! Respond as your Page (not your personal profile), answer questions, and show some love in return. Engagement builds trust – and trust turns followers into loyal customers.
Step 11: Check How Things Are Doing in Analytics
I know, I know – “analytics” sounds boring, maybe even intimidating. But I promise it’s helpful and not that complicated. Simply click “Professional dashboard” from your Page.
Here, you can look at engagement figures to see what’s working (and what’s flopping), when your audience is online, and which posts they love most. That way, you can do more of what’s working and skip the stuff that’s not landing.
Step 12: Pat Yourself on the Back!
Setting up a Facebook Business Page the right way takes time and effort, so go ahead and do a little happy dance. You’ve earned it!
